Belarus is set to become the 10th official member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from July 3 to 4.
The membership expansion is a core focus of the summit, and for many Belarusians, including students, the upcoming admission represents new opportunities.
Holdin Hanna, an international relations undergraduate at Belarus State University currently on exchange at Beijing Foreign Studies University, expressed her excitement about her country’s anticipated SCO membership.
\”Joining the SCO is like a light in our future,\” Hanna told CGTN’s Enoch Wong in an interview. \”It will open doors for more academic and cultural exchanges between Belarusian youth and other member states.\”
Hanna hopes that the SCO will foster greater collaboration in education and culture, providing Belarusian students with broader perspectives and opportunities to engage with peers across Asia.
She also expects that China, as the upcoming rotational president of the SCO, will continue to support economic growth in Belarus and the region.
\”China’s role is significant,\” Hanna said. \”We look forward to enhanced cooperation that will benefit our economies and societies.\”
Belarus’s admission into the SCO marks a significant step in the country’s engagement with Asia’s dynamic political and economic landscape, potentially unlocking new avenues for investment, trade, and cultural ties.
