Chinese Heavyweight Zhang Zhilei Eyes Home Soil Fight After Wilder Victory
Chinese heavyweight boxer Zhang Zhilei has set his sights on bringing a major boxing event to China following his remarkable victory over former WBC world champion Deontay Wilder earlier this month in Riyadh.
In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Talk Sports, the 41-year-old Zhang reflected on his career-defining win and shared his aspirations for the future.
“Our team has been working on holding a top-level fight in China,” Zhang revealed. “We want Chinese boxing fans to enjoy such an event on home soil. There are many boxing enthusiasts in China, and millions stayed up to watch the fight between Wilder and me online. I know they are looking forward to a grand fight being held in China.”
Zhang’s victory over Wilder was attributed to his strategic approach in the ring. He managed to neutralize Wilder’s infamous right hand, a weapon that has felled many opponents in the past.
“His right hand is really powerful,” Zhang acknowledged. “Looking back at his past bouts, many fighters, including Tyson Fury, were knocked down by him. Some were even sent to the hospital. But I managed to limit the use of his right hand. Both of my hands are powerful, while Wilder is only powerful with his right hand. I controlled him, so he had no space to attack.”
As for his next opponent, Zhang mentioned several possibilities but emphasized that he is open to any challenge.
“Because Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will have a rematch in December, they are excluded,” he explained. “But I still have many choices. For example, a rematch against Joseph Parker, as I have an agreement on terms with him. Anthony Joshua can also be considered. And Agit Kabayel as well. I have many opponents to consider, and I am okay with any of them.”
Zhang’s ambition to host a fight in China underscores the growing popularity of boxing in the country. His success on the international stage has inspired many fans and athletes alike, and a homecoming fight could mark a significant milestone for the sport’s development in China.
