Cross-Border Harmony: A Russian Student’s Journey to Tongjiang’s Wurigong Festival

Perched on the right banks of the Songhua and Amur rivers, the city of Tongjiang in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province stands as a vibrant testament to Sino-Russian camaraderie. With a population of 160,000, this border city is a melting pot of cultures, histories, and traditions.

Russian content creator and Tsinghua University student, Anna Yuschenko, recently embarked on a journey to Tongjiang during the Wurigong Festival of the Hezhe ethnic group. Drawn by the allure of the festival and the city’s rich heritage, Anna was eager to immerse herself in the local customs.

The Wurigong Festival, meaning “celebration and joy” in the Hezhe language, is an annual event held on the 15th day of the fifth month in the traditional Chinese calendar. Lasting for two to three days, it is deeply rooted in the Hezhe people’s customs, celebrating their profound connection with nature, particularly fishing culture.

As Anna strolled through the festival, she was captivated by the vibrant displays of traditional Hezhe songs, dances, and attire. The warm hospitality of the local residents made her feel right at home. “I was overwhelmed by the kindness and openness of everyone I met,” she shared. “It felt like being part of a big family.”

Walking through the streets of Tongjiang, Anna noticed numerous shops adorned with Russian signage, a symbolic nod to the timeless exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Russia. These signs told stories of centuries-old trade, friendship, and cultural fusion.

“Seeing Russian words in a Chinese city was surreal yet comforting,” Anna remarked. “It showcased how interconnected our cultures are, despite the physical borders.”

Anna’s journey to Tongjiang not only deepened her appreciation for the Hezhe culture but also highlighted the enduring bond between the Chinese mainland and Russia. Her experience underscores the importance of cross-cultural exploration in fostering global understanding.
