China’s Zhang Zhizhen Makes History with Career-High ATP Ranking

China’s Zhang Zhizhen has climbed nine spots in the ATP World Rankings to reach a career-high world number 33, marking a significant milestone in his professional tennis career.

The 27-year-old from Shanghai achieved his second top-five victory by defeating Daniil Medvedev en route to his first semifinal appearance on grass at the Halle Open in Germany last week. Although he was ultimately bested by the tournament’s eventual champion, Jannik Sinner, Zhang’s performance showcased his growing prowess on the international stage.

Last month, Zhang reached his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Rome, demonstrating consistent form by advancing to the third round of the French Open for the second consecutive year.

With his latest ranking, Zhang becomes the highest-ranked male tennis player from the Chinese mainland. His ascent ensures that he will make history as the first man from the Chinese mainland to be seeded at a Grand Slam event when he competes at Wimbledon next month.

Zhang’s achievements not only signify personal success but also represent a significant moment for tennis in China, inspiring a new generation of players from the region.
