In the rolling hills of western North Macedonia, beekeeper Magda Miloseska has spent over two decades tending to her bees, once finding joy in the hum of her hives. But as climate change alters the environment, her passion faces new challenges.
“These days, we have to fight the climate conditions,” Miloseska says. “Then there are the diseases that have entered our environment.”
Situated in the picturesque village of Stence, surrounded by mountains and bathed in summer sunshine, Miloseska’s apiary was once a haven of productivity. However, rising temperatures are unsettling both bees and beekeepers.
In June, temperatures soared above 30 degrees Celsius—three degrees higher than the seasonal average. “Older beekeepers say they used to get 30 to 50 kilograms of honey from one beehive,” Miloseska notes. “In this period, with these climate conditions, that has decreased substantially.”
The impact is not only felt by producers but also by consumers. Honey prices in North Macedonia have surged by more than 50 percent compared to three years ago, as supply dwindles and demand remains steady.
Climate change is exacerbating challenges in beekeeping, including the spread of diseases affecting bee populations. The combination of higher temperatures and new environmental stressors is making it increasingly difficult for beekeepers like Miloseska to maintain their livelihoods.
As global temperatures continue to rise, North Macedonia’s beekeeping community fears for the future of their industry—and the vital role bees play in pollination and maintaining ecological balance.
“We need to address these climate issues,” Miloseska urges. “It’s not just about honey; it’s about preserving our environment and our way of life.”
The plight of North Macedonia’s beekeepers reflects a broader global challenge, as climate change impacts agricultural sectors worldwide. Support and adaptation strategies are crucial to sustain these essential practices for future generations.
