Negotiations over a contract extension between the Golden State Warriors and their star shooter Klay Thompson have reportedly stalled, according to The Athletic on Saturday.
Thompson, 34, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on June 30 unless an agreement is reached. Drafted by the Warriors as the 11th overall pick in 2011, Thompson has spent his entire NBA career with the team. He has evolved into one of the most lethal shooters in league history, becoming a five-time NBA All-Star, earning two All-NBA Third Team selections, and receiving an All-Defensive Second Team honor. His contributions were pivotal in securing four NBA championships for the Warriors.
However, following two serious injuries in 2019 and 2020, Thompson’s performance has been impacted. He has faced challenges on the defensive end, particularly in roles requiring quickness. Additionally, his hallmark three-point shooting has seen a decline, with his three-point percentage dropping to 38.7%, the second-lowest in his career.
The current impasse in contract negotiations raises questions about Thompson’s future with the Warriors. As the free agency deadline approaches, both parties are under pressure to find common ground to continue their longstanding partnership.
