China Unveils 17 New Innovation Consortiums to Boost Sci-Tech Development

China’s centrally administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have established 17 new innovation consortiums to accelerate science and technology advancement, according to the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of the State Council.

The newly formed consortiums span sectors such as industrial software, computing power networks, new energy, and advanced materials. This initiative raises the total number of centrally administered SOE innovation consortiums to 24, demonstrating China’s commitment to strengthening its innovation capabilities.

The SASAC highlighted that these consortiums are designed to tackle strategic and fundamental technologies that demand substantial investment and collaboration, areas where single entities often face challenges achieving breakthroughs. By fostering partnerships among enterprises, universities, and research institutes, the consortiums aim to enhance the entire innovation chain, from basic research to industrialization.

Previously, China’s centrally administered SOEs had established seven innovation consortiums, bringing together over 300 universities, research institutes, locally administered SOEs, and private companies. These efforts have effectively contributed to the security and stability of the country’s industrial and supply chains.

The expansion of innovation consortiums signifies a strategic move to boost cooperation and drive technological progress across various critical industries, positioning China to make significant strides in its sci-tech development goals.
