Belgian-Chinese Chamber Chairman Warns Against New Trade Barriers

Bernard Dewitm, chairman of the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC), has urged Europe to exercise caution in imposing additional taxes on imports from the Chinese mainland and other countries. In a recent interview with CMG, Dewitm warned that escalating trade barriers could prompt reciprocal actions, potentially harming European exports.

“Europe needs to be careful when applying additional taxes to imports from China or from other countries because China and other countries can do the same with European products,” Dewitm explained. “Overly protectionist measures will not help, and it would be a pity to go back to an era of many trade barriers.”

Dewitm emphasized the importance of maintaining open trade relationships to foster economic growth and stability. He cautioned that increased protectionism could lead to regression in global commerce, adversely affecting businesses and consumers alike.

The BCECC chairman’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions in Europe about trade policies and the potential implementation of new tariffs. Dewitm advocates for dialogue and cooperation to resolve trade disputes, highlighting the mutual benefits of free and fair trade between Europe and its international partners.

“We should seek constructive solutions that support economic development and competitiveness,” he said. “Building more trade barriers is not the answer.”
