UN Warns of Health Risks from Mounting Solid Waste in Gaza

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has sounded the alarm over more than 299,370 tonnes of solid waste accumulating in and around the densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip.

On Thursday, UNRWA highlighted the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access and a ceasefire to address the growing health risks associated with the waste buildup. The agency emphasized that these measures are “crucial to restore humane living conditions” for the residents of Gaza.

Due to ongoing conflicts and limited access, waste management services have been severely disrupted, leading to the piling up of refuse in residential areas. This situation poses significant health hazards, including the spread of diseases and contamination of water sources.

UNRWA teams are actively providing psychological support to children in shelter centers. Through specialized activities such as psychological relief sessions, relaxation techniques, and purposeful games, the agency aims to alleviate the mental stress experienced by young residents amid the crisis.

The accumulation of solid waste exacerbates the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where residents face shortages of basic necessities. The blockade and ongoing conflicts have hindered efforts to maintain essential services, including sanitation and waste disposal.

The international community has been urged to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza. UNRWA continues to call for immediate action to address the health risks and to provide relief to the affected populations.
