China’s Deep-Sea Robot ‘Taurus’ Buries First Seabed Cable for Offshore Wind Project

In a significant technological achievement, a Chinese-developed robot named Taurus has successfully buried its first seabed cable, marking a breakthrough in offshore wind energy projects. The operation took place off the coast of Zhanjiang in Guangdong Province, south China, in late May, according to Sealien (Guangzhou) Technology, the company behind Taurus.

Taurus is a seabed cable and pipeline burying tractor designed to operate at depths of up to 500 meters. Utilizing caterpillar tracks for movement and remote-controlled operation, the robot is set to revolutionize the construction of offshore wind farms by reducing the need for human divers in complex deep-sea environments.

“Our goal is to enhance the efficiency and safety of offshore wind farm construction,” said Ma Yiming, founder of Sealien (Guangzhou) Technology. “By deploying robots like Taurus, we can minimize human risks and accelerate the development of renewable energy infrastructure.”

China has been aggressively pursuing renewable energy sources as part of its commitment to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The nation currently holds the largest installed capacity of offshore wind power globally, and innovations like Taurus are instrumental in sustaining this growth.

Offshore wind energy projects are crucial for meeting the world’s growing energy demands while mitigating environmental impacts. The deployment of advanced robotics in this sector not only enhances operational efficiency but also opens new avenues for technological development in deep-sea exploration and construction.
