The Southern African Development Community (SADC) members have been urged to accelerate policies aimed at protecting the environment. Boemo Sekgoma, secretary general of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, addressed regional parliamentarians during a webinar on Thursday, emphasizing the critical role of parliaments in environmental stewardship.
“The role of parliaments is integral in shaping and enforcing environmental regulatory frameworks that seek to protect natural resources, reduce pollution, and promote renewable energy,” said Sekgoma. She highlighted that legislative bodies have the authority to ensure that governments and industries comply with environmental regulations and international commitments.
Sekgoma called on the parliaments to intensify efforts in enacting and implementing laws that address pressing environmental challenges facing the region. “Our natural resources are the backbone of our economies. It is imperative that we safeguard them for future generations,” she added.
The webinar brought together representatives from SADC member states to discuss strategies for enhancing environmental protection and promoting sustainable development. Topics included the enforcement of environmental laws, investment in renewable energy, and collaboration on cross-border environmental issues.
Environmental degradation and climate change pose significant threats to the SADC region, impacting agriculture, water resources, and biodiversity. By strengthening environmental policies, member states aim to mitigate these effects and foster economic growth through sustainable practices.
Sekgoma urged parliamentarians to engage with all stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector, to develop comprehensive solutions. “Collective action is necessary to address the environmental challenges we face,” she concluded.
