Chongqing Eyes High-Quality Development and Efficient Governance

Chongqing, Southwest China's sprawling municipality, is setting its sights on high-quality development and efficient governance to contribute significantly to Chinese modernization. At a press conference held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing on Wednesday, Chongqing's Mayor Hu Henghua outlined the city's ambitious plans.

Mayor Hu highlighted Chongqing's unique position as the largest provincial-level municipality in terms of jurisdictional area and population. The city plays a pivotal role in multiple strategic initiatives, including the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, a multimodal transport network established by China and Southeast Asian countries.

Chongqing's economy has demonstrated robust growth, with a 6.1 percent GDP increase last year and a 6.2 percent rise in the first quarter of this year. “We have taken solid steps to write our own chapter in advancing Chinese modernization,” Mayor Hu noted.

Emphasizing a people-oriented approach, Hu stated, “The core of a city is its people.” Chongqing has been committed to enhancing the urban lifestyle by improving transportation and city services. Given the city's complex terrain, the central urban area can be challenging for residents, with travel often requiring climbing steep slopes. To address this, Chongqing has developed 13 urban rail lines spanning 538 kilometers and designed “tailor-made” short-distance bus routes to make commuting easier.

Looking ahead, Chongqing aims to enhance the capabilities of its digital city operation and governance center. The city plans to develop more effective and user-friendly digital applications, continuously exploring new paths for the modern governance of mega-cities.
