Chinese Defense Minister Affirms PLA’s Readiness to Safeguard National Unity

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun declared on Sunday that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is prepared to take resolute actions to prevent any move toward “Taiwan independence” and to ensure the island remains an integral part of China.

Speaking at the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Dong emphasized China’s commitment to national sovereignty and territorial integrity during his address on China’s approach to global security.

“We countries in the Asia-Pacific have the ability to resolve tensions among ourselves; we despise coercion from outside hegemonic powers,” Dong stated, proposing six measures to safeguard security and stability in the region.

Reaffirming the One-China Principle

Dong highlighted that the Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests, asserting that the one-China principle is a fundamental norm in international relations. He stressed that safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the sacred mission of the Chinese military.

“China has always been committed to peaceful reunification,” he said, adding that this prospect is being undermined by “Taiwan independence” elements and external forces. He criticized certain parties for promoting “incremental independence” and attempts to sever historical and cultural ties across the Taiwan Strait.

Dong accused external forces of attempting to “obscure and hollow out the one-China principle,” insisting on arms sales to the Taiwan region, and engaging in unauthorized official exchanges. He warned that these actions are “leading the region into a dangerous situation.”

China’s Commitment to Peaceful Development

The defense minister reaffirmed China’s dedication to peaceful development, stating, “China values peace and harmony. Peaceful development is an integral part of our Constitution. We never seek hegemony or military expansion.”

He noted that since the introduction of reforms and opening up, China has downsized the PLA by over four million troops, demonstrating its commitment to peace. “China maintains that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and opposes the law of the jungle,” Dong added.

Emphasizing open cooperation, Dong highlighted that the Chinese military maintains exchanges with over 150 countries. He opposed the formation of “exclusive military alliances” targeting other nations, stating that such “small circles” only escalate tensions.

Call for Strengthened Military Relations

Addressing China-U.S. military relations, Dong noted that their stability concerns global security. “China is always open to exchanges and cooperation, but both sides should work to meet each other halfway,” he urged, calling for increased communication to find ways to coexist peacefully and create positive expectations for the world.

On Global Crises

Regarding the crisis in Ukraine, Dong asserted that China is committed to promoting peace and has not provided weapons to any side of the conflict. “China strictly manages the export of dual-use articles and has never fueled the conflict with more weaponry,” he said, emphasizing China’s firm stance on peace and dialogue.

On the Palestine-Israel conflict, Dong stated that China is working with the international community to promote a ceasefire and end hostilities.
