Smithsonian’s National Zoo to Welcome Two New Giant Pandas from China

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo in the United States is set to welcome two new giant pandas from China later this year. The China Wildlife Conservation Association and the National Zoo have signed a new agreement focusing on giant panda conservation research.

The two pandas, Bao Li, a male born in August 2021, and Qing Bao, a female born in September 2021, will be making the journey from China to their new home in Washington, D.C. The arrival of these young pandas marks a significant continuation of the decades-long collaboration between China and the U.S. in the field of wildlife conservation.

To ensure the pandas’ well-being, Chinese experts have visited the National Zoo three times in 2024, providing guidance on enclosure facilities, feeding protocols, food safety, veterinary care, and other essential requirements. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both countries to the preservation and study of this beloved and endangered species.

Visitors to the National Zoo can look forward to observing Bao Li and Qing Bao as they adapt to their new environment, offering a unique opportunity to learn more about giant pandas and the conservation efforts aimed at protecting them.
