Temperatures in India’s capital soared to an unprecedented 49.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, marking the highest temperature ever recorded in Delhi, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The severe heatwave conditions were particularly acute in the northern suburbs, with IMD stations in Narela and Mungeshpur registering the record-breaking heat. Residents faced scorching conditions as the city grappled with the intense temperatures.
“This is an alarming situation,” a spokesperson for the IMD stated. “Such extreme temperatures are rare and pose significant health risks to the population.”
Previously, in May 2022, parts of Delhi experienced temperatures reaching 49.2 degrees Celsius, which was surpassed by Tuesday’s record. The continuing trend of rising temperatures in the region has raised concerns among experts about the impacts of climate change.
Health officials have urged citizens to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, advising people to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and watch for symptoms of heatstroke.
