Located in one of Gaza’s most densely populated areas, Al-Daraj School currently shelters 3,600 Palestinians from 460 families. Among them are approximately 1,700 children, whose laughter and play bring a semblance of normalcy to the somber surroundings. The school’s classrooms and hallways, once filled with the sounds of education, now echo with stories of resilience and community.
“We had nowhere else to go,” says Fatima, a mother of four who arrived at the school after her neighborhood was evacuated. “Here, we have a roof over our heads and people who understand what we’re going through.”
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has been instrumental in providing assistance, ensuring that basic needs are met despite the overwhelming number of people seeking help. Volunteers and staff work tirelessly to distribute food, water, and medical supplies, while also setting up makeshift classrooms to keep children engaged and learning.
However, challenges persist. Overcrowding has strained resources, and concerns about health and sanitation grow with each passing day. “We are doing everything we can, but the situation is dire,” admits Ahmed, an UNRWA coordinator at the school. “The international community’s support is crucial to sustain our efforts.”
