China’s Shenzhou-18 crew is gearing up for their first extravehicular activity (EVA), commonly known as a spacewalk, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced on Monday.
The crew, consisting of taikonauts Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu, has been diligently preparing for this significant milestone. In a video released by the CMSA, the taikonauts are seen meticulously checking their spacesuits, inspecting tools and equipment essential for the EVA, training on the operation of the robotic arms, and donning their spacesuits—all activities carried out within the cabin of the China Space Station.
The agency has not disclosed which two of the three taikonauts will participate in the EVA. Traditionally, spacewalks involve two crew members conducting tasks outside the spacecraft while the third remains inside to support the operation.
Since their arrival at the China Space Station on April 26, the Shenzhou-18 crew has spent 32 days in orbit, engaging in a series of scientific experiments and technological tests. These activities are crucial for advancing China’s space exploration capabilities and contributing to international understanding of space sciences.
