The semifinal matchups at the 2024 Malaysia Masters badminton tournament were determined on Friday, with the Chinese team making a strong showing by advancing in three events.
Men’s Singles:
In an intense match lasting one hour and 24 minutes, China’s Lu Guangzu overcame Jason Gunawan of Team Hong Kong, China, with scores of 21-17, 15-21, 21-14. Lu will face top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the semifinals on Saturday. The other semifinal will feature NG Ka Long Angus from Hong Kong, China, against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia.
Women’s Singles:
An all-Chinese semifinal is set in the women’s singles. Wang Zhiyi defeated her teammate Gao Fangjie, while Zhang Yiman triumphed over India’s Ashmita Chaliha. The other semifinal will see India’s Pusarla V. Sindhu compete against Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan.
Men’s Doubles:
On Friday, China’s third-seeded men’s doubles pair, He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu, overpowered their Malaysian opponents to secure a semifinal spot against South Korea’s Jin Yong and Na Sung-seung. The other men’s doubles semifinal will pit Malaysian pair Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap against Denmark’s second seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.
Women’s Doubles:
Japanese duo Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi will face Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva in the semifinals. Meanwhile, South Korean pair Lee Yu-lim and Shin Seung-chan are set to challenge Malaysia’s Tan Pearly and Thinaah Muralitharan.
Mixed Doubles:
The mixed doubles semifinals on Saturday will feature an all-Malaysian clash between top seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei and their teammates Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie. Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas will compete against Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje.
The Malaysia Masters runs from May 21 to 26.
