When American scholar Misha Tadd first stumbled upon the Tao Te Ching at the age of 14, he had no idea it would shape his life’s work. Growing up in the natural landscapes of western Massachusetts, Tadd was instantly captivated by the ancient Chinese text he found during a routine library visit for a school project.
A Serendipitous Discovery
Drawn initially by the large calligraphy photos, the Tao Te Ching resonated deeply with Tadd’s own experiences and values. “The first line says, ‘The Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao.’ The paradoxical nature and wordplay make Taoism intriguing, shaking up conventional thinking,” he reflects.
From Fascination to Scholarship
This early fascination led Tadd to study the Chinese language in high school and eventually pursue a career in philosophy. Now an associate professor at Nankai University’s College of Philosophy and director of the Global Laozegetics Research Center, he is dedicated to fostering cross-cultural understanding through Taoist philosophy.
Promoting Taoism in a Modern World
Tadd acknowledges the challenges of conveying the complexities of Taoism in a digital age where serendipitous discoveries are rare. “Describing Taoism can be difficult because of its intricate and mysterious nature,” he admits. Yet, he remains committed to making these ancient ideas accessible, emphasizing the playful wordplay and unconventional concepts that provoke new ways of thinking.
The Timeless Appeal of the Tao Te Ching
The Tao Te Ching‘s simplicity and timeless relevance have contributed to its global influence, with over 2,000 translations in 97 languages. “Its value lies not just in its age but in its ability to speak across time,” says Tadd. The text continues to inspire scholars, artists, and thinkers worldwide.
Bridging Cultures Through Philosophy
As director of the Global Laozegetics Research Center, Tadd aims to create a collaborative platform for scholars and creatives to explore Taoist philosophy. “It’s about fostering dialogue and understanding rather than promoting ideas,” he explains. Through his work, he hopes to demonstrate the relevance of Taoist thought in contemporary society and its potential to foster harmony in an interconnected world.
