China and U.S. Hold First Inter-Governmental Dialogue on AI in Geneva

China and the United States convened their first inter-governmental dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI) in Geneva on Tuesday, marking a significant step toward international cooperation in the rapidly evolving field of AI technology.

The meeting brought together representatives from both nations to engage in in-depth, professional, and constructive discussions on the risks and opportunities associated with AI. Key topics included global governance, risk mitigation strategies, and the socioeconomic implications of AI development.

Chinese officials emphasized the nation’s view of AI as one of the most pivotal emerging technologies of our time. They reiterated China’s commitment to putting people first, ensuring that AI advancements are beneficial, safe, and equitable for all. China expressed support for strengthening global governance of AI, advocating for the United Nations to play a central role in facilitating international cooperation.

“China stands ready to enhance communication and coordination with the international community, including the U.S., to establish a global framework and standards for AI governance based on broad consensus,” stated a Chinese representative at the meeting.

The Chinese delegation also conveyed concerns regarding U.S. restrictions and measures affecting China in the AI sector, urging for fair and open collaboration to foster innovation and progress.

Both sides acknowledged the dual nature of AI development, recognizing the significant opportunities it presents alongside potential risks. They reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the important consensus reached by the two presidents during their recent meeting in San Francisco.
