China Urges E-Bike Manufacturers to Adopt BeiDou Positioning System

China is encouraging domestic manufacturers of electric mopeds and scooters to install the BeiDou high-precision satellite positioning system in their products, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Wednesday.

The initiative aims to enhance the industry’s innovation by fostering the development of lightweight, intelligent, and networked products. Electric bicycle manufacturers have been called upon to increase investment in research and development to better meet consumer demand, according to documents issued by the MIIT and two other authorities.

As a major producer and user of electric mopeds and scooters, China has ownership of such vehicles reaching 350 million nationwide. Despite this vast market, the industry faces challenges including low industrial concentration and weak innovative capabilities, the ministry noted.

In response, China is urging the sector to upgrade its quality and improve safety across the board, including in production, sales, product use, charging facilities, and recycling processes. The integration of the BeiDou system is seen as a step towards achieving these goals and strengthening the industry’s overall development.
