China is leading a global initiative to promote bamboo as a sustainable substitute for plastic. In 2023, the Chinese government, in collaboration with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, issued the “Global Action Plan for Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic (2023-2030).” This ambitious plan outlines six key goals and 23 specific actions to encourage the worldwide shift from plastic to bamboo.
With its abundant bamboo resources, China is well-positioned to spearhead this movement. The country is home to 837 species of bamboo, covering an area of 7.56 million hectares. Annually, China produces over 150 million tonnes of bamboo, according to Wang Ge, a researcher at the National Forestry and Grassland Administration’s International Centre for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR).
As of early this year, more than 20 industrial bases dedicated to bamboo-based alternatives to plastic are under construction or planned across 17 major bamboo-producing provinces in China. This surge in development reflects the vast potential of bamboo as a versatile material. Currently, there are over 10,000 types of bamboo products used in diverse fields ranging from daily-use items and building materials to industrial manufacturing and agricultural production.
