China Accelerates Development of Modern Eco-Environment Monitoring System

China has announced measures to accelerate the development of a modern eco-environment monitoring system, aiming to complete it by 2035 and elevate its capabilities to a globally advanced level, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Pei Xiaofei, spokesperson for the ministry, stated that China has established the world’s largest and most comprehensive eco-environment monitoring network. Currently, the country directly monitors over 33,000 sites, marking significant improvements in monitoring quality, efficiency, technological capabilities, and regulatory oversight.

To expedite the construction of this modern system, China plans to address existing weaknesses in monitoring and formulate sector standards, Pei said. Efforts will focus on enhancing analytical and forecasting capabilities, and advancing integrated monitoring that spans from mountainous regions to maritime territories.

The ministry also emphasized the importance of technological advancement and strengthened regulatory efforts in eco-environment monitoring. These initiatives aim to bolster China’s ability to monitor, analyze, and respond to environmental challenges effectively.

By 2035, the completion of this modern eco-environment monitoring system is expected to significantly contribute to China’s environmental protection efforts and global ecological sustainability.
