This month marks both Labor Day and Youth Day in China, moments of reflection and inspiration for many young people across the nation. Among them is Mian Xukun, a first-year student at the Communication University of Zhejiang, who is majoring in bilingual broadcasting.
Inspired by the spirit of China’s Youth Day, celebrated annually on May 4, Mian is passionate about uniting youths from around the world to build a better future. Youth Day commemorates the historic May Fourth Movement of 1919, when Chinese students protested against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, igniting a new democratic revolution in China. This movement symbolizes patriotism, reform, and the proactive spirit of the young generation.
“Youth Day motivates our passion to challenge the world,” Mian shared. “No matter where we come from or what we study, young people should work together and contribute our strength to build a better world.”
Mian’s vision extends beyond national borders. She believes in the power of global collaboration among youths from different countries. Her aspiration is to become an excellent bilingual journalist, using her proficiency in Chinese and English to showcase the real China to the world. “I dream of bridging cultures and sharing authentic stories,” she said. “Through journalism, I want to foster understanding and cooperation among global youths.”
Recently, Mian participated in an event organized by CGTN, where youths from Poland, Russia, China, Armenia, and Belarus discussed their career expectations and shared their perspectives on the future. This experience reinforced her belief in the importance of international dialogue and the role of young people in shaping the global landscape.
As the world faces unprecedented challenges, Mian’s commitment to unity and positive change reflects a growing sentiment among young people in Asia and beyond. Her journey underscores the significance of Youth Day as more than a historical remembrance—it is a call to action for the next generation to lead with passion, innovation, and a collaborative spirit.
