A newly released think tank report is calling for enhanced cooperation between China and the European Union (EU) on environment and climate issues, proposing it as a new driving force for their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Jointly released on Friday, the report titled “China-EU Cooperation on Environment and Climate: Progress and Prospects” highlights the potential for the two sides to strengthen their green partnership and leverage bilateral cooperation to address global environmental challenges.
The report was jointly issued by the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, the National Energy Conservation Center, the Xinhua Institute, and the Institutes of Science and Development under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“China and the EU should effectively leverage the important role of bilateral cooperation on environment and climate, making it a new engine for comprehensive strategic cooperation, a new highlight of economic and trade relations, a new bond for cultural exchange, and a new model for global environment and climate cooperation,” the report stated.
It emphasizes the importance of a mechanism-led approach, suggesting that the China-EU High-Level Environment and Climate Dialogue should become the leading platform for further cooperation involving multiple entities, levels, and areas.
Environment and climate topics can also be integrated into other high-level mechanisms. For example, there could be dialogues and exchanges related to environmental products, services, and green trade at the China-EU High-Level Economic and Trade Dialogue.
This enhanced cooperation could not only benefit both parties economically and environmentally but also contribute significantly to global efforts in combating climate change.
