Shanghai, China—As China and France commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations this year, one Shanghai resident is taking cultural exchange into his own hands. Li Wei, a passionate linguist and cultural enthusiast, has dedicated himself to promoting mutual understanding between the two nations through language education and cultural events.
“Language is the key to understanding a culture,” Li says. “By learning French, I not only opened a door to a new world but also found a bridge connecting our peoples.”
Li began learning French in university and quickly became enamored with French literature, art, and philosophy. After graduating, he founded a language center in Shanghai that offers French language courses and cultural workshops.
The center has become a hub for cultural exchange, hosting events like French film nights, art exhibitions, and culinary experiences. “We aim to provide an immersive environment where people can truly experience French culture,” Li explains.
As both China and France seek to strengthen their bilateral ties, grassroots initiatives like Li’s play a crucial role in fostering goodwill and understanding. “Official relations are important, but it’s the people-to-people connections that truly bring countries together,” Li notes.
Li’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. He was recently invited to a cultural forum organized by the French Consulate in Shanghai, where he shared his experiences and discussed ways to enhance cultural dialogue between the two nations.
With plans to expand his language center and collaborate on international projects, Li Wei continues to build bridges between China and France, one conversation at a time.
