Sydney’s ambition to join the elite World Marathon Majors circuit has gained significant momentum with the announcement that the 2024 Sydney Marathon has reached full capacity at 24,000 runners—the largest field in the event’s history.
The race, whose origins date back to the 2000 Olympic Games, is currently in the second year of an appraisal process that could see it join prestigious marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York as part of the global series from 2025.
“This is a momentous year for the Sydney Marathon as we aim to become the next World Marathon Major,” said race director Wayne Larden in a news release. “We are committed to delivering a world-class event that Australia is proud of, and we look forward to welcoming a record number of runners and spectators locally, nationally, and from around the world to make history.”
Last year’s marathon in the harbor city attracted 17,000 runners and more than 100,000 spectators, setting previous records. The surge in participation highlights Sydney’s growing appeal as a premier marathon destination.
Despite the impressive growth, Sydney acknowledges the challenge of matching the enthusiasm of more established races. This week, London Marathon organizers announced receiving 840,318 applications for the ballot to run the 2025 race.
The 2024 Sydney Marathon will take place on a new course on the morning of September 15, offering runners a fresh experience of the iconic city.
