Kaori Sakamoto of Japan has etched her name in the annals of figure skating history by securing her third consecutive world championship title at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal on Friday. This remarkable feat makes her the first woman to achieve a three-peat in the sport since American legend Peggy Fleming did so in 1968.
Sakamoto, 22, delivered an outstanding performance, earning a total score of 222.96 points. Her flawless routines captivated the audience and judges alike, showcasing her technical prowess and artistic expression. This victory caps off an undefeated season for Sakamoto, who also claimed gold at the ISU Grand Prix Final and the Japanese National Championships in December last year.
“I’m overwhelmed with joy,” Sakamoto said after her win. “It’s been a challenging season, but standing atop the podium again makes all the hard work worthwhile. I’m honored to follow in the footsteps of great skaters like Peggy Fleming.”
The silver medal went to Isabeau Levito, a 17-year-old American making her mark in her first senior world competition. Levito’s graceful performances earned her a spot on the podium and signaled the arrival of a new talent on the international stage.
Kim Chae-yeon of South Korea, also 17, secured the bronze medal. Competing in only her second World Championships, Kim impressed judges with her technical skills and composure under pressure.
Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx, who led after the short program on Wednesday, encountered difficulties in her free skate, ultimately finishing in fourth place. Despite the setback, Hendrickx remains a strong competitor and is expected to continue her pursuit of podium finishes in future competitions.
The event highlighted the rising stars of women’s figure skating, with young athletes from around the globe challenging the established elites. Sakamoto’s historic victory not only cements her legacy but also inspires the next generation of skaters striving for excellence.
