In a groundbreaking move for urban air mobility, China has granted a Production Certificate (PC) to the homegrown EH216-S, the world’s first certified pilotless electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) issued the certificate on Sunday, marking a significant milestone towards mass production and commercial operations of passenger-carrying eVTOLs.
Developed by Guangzhou-based EHang, a leading urban air mobility (UAM) technology platform company, the EH216-S is poised to revolutionize transportation with its autonomous flying capabilities. The aircraft had previously obtained the Type Certificate (TC) and standard airworthiness certificate (AC) from the CAAC last year, demonstrating compliance with rigorous safety and performance standards.
“The issuance of the Production Certificate is a testament to our relentless pursuit of innovation and safety in urban air mobility,” said a spokesperson from EHang. “We are now moving closer to making safe, autonomous aerial transportation accessible to everyone.”
The CAAC’s approval is the first of its kind in the global eVTOL industry, positioning China at the forefront of developing and commercializing advanced aerial vehicles. The EH216-S’s certification paves the way for mass production, signaling a new era in passenger transport, cargo delivery, and urban logistics.
Industry experts believe that the mass production of the EH216-S will accelerate the integration of eVTOLs into urban transportation networks, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional ground transportation. The move is expected to catalyze further advancements in the global eVTOL market, attracting investors and fostering international collaboration.
The EH216-S is designed for short to medium-range flights, capable of carrying two passengers without the need for a pilot. Its electric propulsion system reduces emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote green technology.
EHang’s achievement reflects China’s commitment to innovation and development in the aerospace sector, potentially transforming urban mobility and shaping the future of transportation across Asia and the world.
