From Backup to Hero: Deng Qingming’s Journey to Space

How Time Flies: The Story of Deng Qingming’s Realized Dream

As we find ourselves a third of the way through 2024, many reflect on the dreams they’ve achieved. In China, countless individuals have turned aspirations into reality, inspiring many with their stories. Among them stands Deng Qingming, a member of China’s Shenzhou-15 astronaut crew, known affectionately as the “Dream Crew.”

At 56, an age considered past the prime for astronauts, Deng’s selection for the Shenzhou-15 manned space mission in 2022 was nothing short of remarkable. His journey wasn’t easy; four times he was designated as a backup for the Shenzhou-9, -10, -11, and -12 missions. Each time, he watched as others took the mantle, his own opportunity seemingly slipping away.

“It’s impossible not to feel frustrated sometimes,” Deng admitted. Yet, his dedication never wavered. He believed deeply that every mission’s success represented the collective effort of all Chinese astronauts. “As long as the mission is successful, my efforts pay off, even though I was only ‘Plan B,'” he said.

Rather than succumb to disappointment, Deng channeled his energy into rigorous training, maintaining peak physical and mental condition. His unwavering commitment ensured that when the opportunity finally arose, he was ready to embrace it fully. In 2022, his perseverance paid off as he ascended into space, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Deng Qingming’s story is a testament to relentless pursuit and dedication. It illustrates how China’s rapidly advancing space industry not only achieves national milestones but also empowers individuals to realize their personal ambitions. His journey from perennial backup to space-bound hero resonates with many, offering inspiration to all who strive toward their dreams.
