Beijing recently hosted the Forum on the Development of Cutting-Edge Technologies in Science Fiction, a highlight of the China Science Fiction Convention 2024. The event gathered prominent science fiction writers, scholars, and entrepreneurs to discuss the symbiotic relationship between science fiction and technological innovation.
Liu Cixin, the acclaimed author of The Three-Body Problem and the first Asian writer to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel, shared his insights during an exclusive interview with CGTN’s Yang Yan. Liu emphasized the unique role that science fiction plays in inspiring scientific breakthroughs and shaping the future.
“Science fiction provides a sandbox for exploring the possibilities of technology and its impact on humanity,” Liu said. “It allows us to imagine scenarios beyond the constraints of current scientific understanding, which can stimulate real-world innovation.”
The forum delved into how imaginative narratives can influence cutting-edge research in fields such as artificial intelligence, space exploration, and quantum computing. Scholars highlighted examples where concepts from science fiction have spurred technological advances, bridging the gap between imagination and reality.
Liu also discussed the rising prominence of Chinese science fiction on the global stage. “Chinese sci-fi is gaining attention worldwide, reflecting not just our cultural heritage but also our perspectives on universal themes,” he noted. “This global interest encourages cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration in both literature and science.”
Entrepreneurs at the forum explored partnerships between the creative and technological sectors. By fostering collaborations, they aim to accelerate innovation and address complex challenges facing society.
The China Science Fiction Convention 2024 serves as a platform for bridging the gap between storytellers and scientists. As Liu Cixin concluded, “When science and imagination come together, we unlock the potential to shape a better future.”
