Nationwide School Closures as Heatwave Grips Bangladesh
An intense heatwave sweeping across Bangladesh has prompted a nationwide shutdown of schools, as authorities respond to soaring temperatures that have disrupted daily life and endangered public health.
On Monday, a Bangladeshi court ordered all educational institutions to close their doors, a day after the government had reopened schools amidst the rising heat. The abrupt reversal underscores the severity of the heatwave, with millions of children now staying home to avoid exposure to the extreme conditions.
Average temperatures in the capital city of Dhaka have surged 4 to 5 degrees Celsius above the 30-year average for this time of year. Thermometers have consistently registered over 40 degrees Celsius, and forecasters expect the sweltering heat to persist until at least Thursday.
“The heat is unprecedented,” said Rahman Ali, a resident of Dhaka. “It’s difficult to go outside, and we’re worried about the health of our children.”
Since the beginning of April, the government has reported at least seven heat-related deaths. Hospitals are preparing for an influx of patients suffering from heatstroke and dehydration, while officials urge the public to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
Climate experts warn that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Extensive scientific research indicates that rising global temperatures are leading to longer, more intense heatwaves worldwide.
“This is a stark reminder of the impacts of climate change,” remarked Dr. Shamina Akhter, a climate scientist at the University of Dhaka. “Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable, and we must take immediate action to mitigate these effects.”
The heatwave has also disrupted economic activities, with outdoor laborers facing hazardous working conditions. Authorities are considering additional measures to protect vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
As the nation grapples with the relentless heat, communities are coming together to support one another. Local organizations are distributing water and providing shaded areas for those in need. The government is monitoring the situation closely and has pledged to implement strategies to cope with future heatwaves.
For now, the priority remains the safety and well-being of Bangladesh’s citizens as they endure this challenging period.
