China and Germany Enhance Barley Research Collaboration at Beijing Symposium

Chinese and German scientists are deepening their collaboration on barley research to promote international cooperation in agricultural science. At the International Symposium of Barley Adaptation held in Beijing from April 22 to 26, experts from both nations gathered to share insights and advancements in barley studies.

Barley, the world’s fourth-largest cereal crop, is renowned for its wide adaptability and strong stress resistance, making it a vital resource for global food security and agricultural development. The joint efforts aim to enhance the understanding and utilization of barley’s genetic resources.

Zhou Wenbin, director of the Institute of Crop Sciences (ICS) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), highlighted the progress made through collaboration with Germany’s Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research. “Our collective research into germplasm resources, bioinformatics, and genomics technology has significantly advanced China’s basic research on barley and elevated the international influence of Chinese barley researchers,” Zhou said.

Since its launch in November 2022, the China-German cooperation project on the population genomics analysis of barley adaptation has been progressing successfully. Scientists have achieved notable results in understanding how barley adapts to diverse climates using cutting-edge genomics technology.

“The symposium serves as a vital platform for exchange and cooperation between China and Germany in both academic research and the industrial application of barley,” Zhou added.
