5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region

A magnitude-5.2 earthquake shook Ngari Prefecture in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Saturday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the surface.

Local authorities are currently assessing the situation to determine any potential damage or casualties.

Ngari Prefecture, situated in the western part of Xizang, is known for its high-altitude terrain and sparse population. Earthquakes are relatively common in this seismically active region due to the tectonic activity along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Residents in nearby areas reported feeling the quake, though there have been no immediate reports of significant damage. Emergency response teams have been mobilized to monitor the aftermath and provide assistance if necessary.

The CENC continues to monitor seismic activity in the region and has advised residents to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.
