China-Laos Railway Expands International Passenger Service with New Trains

On Saturday, Chinese and Lao railway authorities unveiled an additional pair of trains for the China-Laos Railway’s international passenger service, enhancing connectivity between the two nations. This expansion coincides with the first anniversary of the international passenger service, marking a significant milestone in the railway’s operation.

The China-Laos Railway, a landmark project under the Belt and Road Initiative, commenced operations in December 2021. Stretching over 1,035 kilometers, it connects Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province, with Vientiane, the capital of Laos, fostering economic and cultural exchanges between the countries.

The newly added trains will operate between Xishuangbanna in China and Luang Prabang in Laos, both renowned for their rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., these trains will run four days a week—every Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The journey spans six stations and takes approximately five hours, allowing travelers to complete a round trip within a single day.

Over the past year, the international service of the China-Laos Railway has transported 180,000 cross-border passengers from 87 countries and regions, significantly boosting tourism and trade in the region. The introduction of the new trains is expected to further enhance accessibility to popular destinations and support the growing demand for international travel between China and Laos.
