Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of development and cooperation over turbulence and division in the Asia-Pacific region during a meeting on Friday in Beijing. Wang met with Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), where he highlighted the need for unity to promote regional growth.
“What the Asia-Pacific needs is development, not turbulence. The emphasis should be on cooperation, not division,” Wang Yi stated. He underscored China’s commitment to working with ESCAP to enhance economic and social progress in the region.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, lauded ESCAP as the most important regional cooperation mechanism of the United Nations in the Asia-Pacific. He noted that over the years, ESCAP has had fruitful cooperation with China, contributing significantly to regional development.
Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana expressed appreciation for China’s support and collaboration with ESCAP. She highlighted the organization’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and addressing shared challenges in the Asia-Pacific region.
The meeting comes at a time when the Asia-Pacific region faces various economic and political challenges. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of strengthening multilateral cooperation to ensure stability and prosperity for all nations and regions involved.
