Rare Guizhou Grey Snub-Nosed Monkey Born at Fanjingshan Reserve

The Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve in southwest China’s Guizhou Province is celebrating a significant addition to its wildlife family—a newborn Guizhou grey snub-nosed monkey. Born to mother Fanfan and father Tiantian on the evening of March 21, 2024, the female infant is in healthy condition and marks a hopeful moment for one of China’s most endangered species.

The reserve’s wildlife rescue center is extending an invitation to readers worldwide to help name the new arrival. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the conservation efforts for the Guizhou grey snub-nosed monkey, a species with an estimated population of only around 800 individuals globally.

Fanfan and Tiantian, originally from the wild, found refuge at the center after sustaining injuries. Their successful breeding underscores the importance of conservation programs in preserving the delicate biodiversity of the region. The Guizhou grey snub-nosed monkeys primarily inhabit the mountainous forests of Fanjingshan at elevations ranging from 500 to 2,000 meters above sea level.

Classified as a national first-level protected animal in 1989 and listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2008, the species faces threats from habitat loss and fragmentation. The birth of this infant monkey brings renewed attention to the efforts needed to protect and preserve these rare primates.

Readers are encouraged to contribute name suggestions for the baby monkey, fostering a global connection to the conservation of this remarkable species. Suggestions can be submitted through the reserve’s official channels.
