China has firmly reiterated its opposition to external interference in the South China Sea, emphasizing its indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Qundao (Spratly Islands), including Ren’ai Jiao (Second Thomas Shoal), and their adjacent waters, as well as the Diaoyu Islands and their affiliated islets. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made these remarks on Friday during a regular press briefing in Beijing.
The statements came in response to U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent commitment to “deepening maritime and security ties” with Japan and the Philippines. On Thursday, leaders from Japan, the Philippines, and the United States held a summit where they expressed opposition to China’s activities in the South China Sea and East China Sea in a joint vision statement.
Mao Ning emphasized that China’s activities in the East China Sea and South China Sea are in full compliance with international law. “China is committed to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea,” she stated.
She criticized the actions of certain non-regional countries, implying that their interference under the guise of freedom of navigation and overflight infringes upon China’s sovereignty and development interests. “Emboldened by the support of non-regional countries, certain countries have continued to take provocative actions at sea, thus raising tensions,” Mao said. “It is outrageous that certain non-regional countries are fanning the flames and provoking confrontation.”
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also reiterated China’s stance on resolving maritime issues through dialogue and consultation with directly concerned countries. “We oppose interference from non-regional countries that stir up trouble and escalate the situation,” she added.
Regarding the so-called award of the South China Sea arbitration, Mao Ning declared it “illegal and void,” noting that China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime interests are not affected by the award under any circumstances.
Mao Ning concluded by criticizing the United States for clinging to a Cold War mentality and threatening other countries with bilateral alliances, which she said seriously violates the United Nations Charter and undermines regional stability.
