Top seeds Casper Ruud of Norway and Hubert Hurkacz of Poland showcased their dominance at the Millennium Estoril Open on Friday, both securing spots in the semifinals with impressive victories.
Casper Ruud, the tournament’s top seed, faced Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics and delivered a commanding performance. Ruud capitalized on 3 of 5 break points, defeating Fucsovics 6-3, 6-2. “I’m pleased with how I played today,” Ruud said after the match. “I managed to stay focused and take advantage of my opportunities.”
Ruud will next face Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the semifinals, aiming to continue his strong run in the tournament.
Second seed Hubert Hurkacz had a tougher challenge against Spanish qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz. After a tightly contested first set that led to a tiebreaker, Hurkacz prevailed 7-6 (4), 6-4. Demonstrating resilience, Hurkacz saved all eight break points he faced, including five in the first set. “It was a tough match,” Hurkacz reflected. “I’m happy I was able to stay solid on my serve and move forward.”
Hurkacz is set to face Chile’s Cristian Garin in the next round.
In other action, at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, Morocco, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini defeated compatriot and fourth seed Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 7-6 (5) to advance to the semifinals. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist displayed a powerful serve, winning 83.6 percent of his first-serve points and firing five aces. “It’s great to be back and competing at this level,” Berrettini commented. “Lorenzo is a tough opponent, and I’m glad to have come through.”
Berrettini will face Argentina’s Mariano Navone, the only seeded player remaining in the draw. Meanwhile, Russia’s Pavel Kotov will meet Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena after both secured convincing victories in their quarterfinal matches.
