An investigation by Teikoku Databank has revealed that the red yeast rice products produced by Osaka-based Kobayashi Pharmaceutical may affect up to 33,000 enterprises across Japan. This revelation comes after health concerns linked to these products led to recalls and reports of adverse events.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical supplied red yeast rice raw materials to 225 companies. Some of these materials were sold directly, while others were processed and resold, significantly expanding their reach within the marketplace. The investigation highlights that this distribution chain could potentially impact a vast network of businesses, including retailers and medical enterprises.
According to the findings, food and beverage retailers are the largest group affected, numbering 5,582 enterprises. Additionally, 5,171 other retail enterprises, 3,884 medical enterprises, and 3,115 restaurants have been impacted. The widespread distribution underscores the extensive reliance on Kobayashi’s products within various sectors of Japan’s economy.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has initiated recalls of multiple products, including its popular “Beni-koji choleste-help” supplement, marketed for cholesterol reduction. The dietary supplements containing red yeast rice, known in Japan as “beni-koji,” have been potentially linked to adverse health events. As of Monday, there have been reports of five deaths and approximately 166 hospitalizations associated with these products.
