Austria’s Business Leader Praises Hong Kong’s Resilience and Opportunities

Wilhelm Brauner, chairman of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong and Macao, has affirmed Hong Kong’s enduring appeal as a global business hub. With over two decades of experience in the city, Brauner shared his insights on the city’s resilience and future prospects.

Arriving in Hong Kong in 1996 as an assistant trade commissioner, Brauner witnessed firsthand the city’s evolution. “Hong Kong has always been a place where setting up a business is straightforward and efficient,” he reflected. He emphasized the simplicity of the tax system and the minimal bureaucratic hurdles, contrasting it with the complexities often found in European countries.

Brauner highlighted Hong Kong’s adherence to the rule of law as a cornerstone of its business environment. “The legal framework here, backed by the Basic Law, provides a level of predictability and safety that’s crucial for entrepreneurs, especially small and medium-sized enterprises,” he noted.

Addressing perceptions abroad, Brauner acknowledged that media portrayals in Europe sometimes diverge from reality. “Visitors who come to Hong Kong often find that the city remains vibrant and unchanged, countering any negative expectations they might have had,” he said.

He also underscored the city’s status as one of the safest globally. “Despite the challenges of recent years, Hong Kong has returned to its customary law and order. This sense of security is vital for both business operations and daily life,” Brauner asserted.

Looking to the future, Brauner expressed confidence in Hong Kong’s potential amidst global economic challenges post-pandemic. He pointed to the opportunities presented by the development of the Greater Bay Area, suggesting that Hong Kong is well-positioned for growth and innovation.

“Hong Kong’s resilience has been proven time and again,” Brauner concluded. “Its strategic location, coupled with its strong legal and economic foundations, make it an ideal place for businesses to thrive in the coming years.”
