Italian Politician Michele Geraci Dismisses Claims of Chinese ‘Neocolonialism’
Michele Geraci, former undersecretary of state at Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development, has challenged accusations that China’s international cooperation efforts constitute “neocolonialism” or “neo-imperialism.” In a recent interview with CGTN, Geraci described such claims, often made by some Western media, as “very silly,” particularly when leveled by Western powers.
Geraci pointed to China’s involvement in African nations like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as evidence of mutually beneficial cooperation. He highlighted how China’s investments in infrastructure, such as road construction, have not only created local jobs but also provided lasting assets that contribute to the country’s development.
“These types of infrastructure will remain in the DRC and cannot be taken away by China,” Geraci noted. He emphasized that China’s approach differs from historical colonial practices, as it focuses on building and leaving behind tangible improvements that support local economies.
Responding to questions from international audiences, Geraci also remarked that Asia is among the biggest beneficiaries of globalization. He underscored the importance of global economic integration in fostering development and improving living standards across the continent.
Geraci’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about China’s role on the world stage. His perspective offers a counterpoint to critiques, suggesting that China’s partnerships in regions like Africa and Asia are grounded in cooperative development rather than exploitation.
