Xi Jinping Promotes Two Military Officers to China’s Highest Rank

Beijing, October 26, 2023 – In a significant ceremony held on Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping, who also serves as the chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), presented certificates to two senior military officers, promoting them to the rank of general—the highest active-duty rank in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The honored officers are Wang Renhua, secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CMC, and Xiao Tianliang, president of the University of National Defense. Their promotions reflect their distinguished service and contributions to China’s national defense and military modernization.

During the ceremony, Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the CMC, announced the order of promotion signed by President Xi. Another CMC vice chairman, He Weidong, presided over the event, which was attended by senior military officials and dignitaries.

President Xi extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly appointed generals, emphasizing the importance of their roles in strengthening the military’s capabilities and upholding national security. Following the formal proceedings, Xi and other leaders joined the officers for commemorative photographs, marking the occasion.

The promotion to the rank of general signifies the highest level of trust and responsibility within the PLA’s hierarchy. As China continues to advance its military reforms and modernization efforts, leaders like Wang Renhua and Xiao Tianliang are expected to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of the nation’s defense strategy.
