Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Harvard University Professor Graham Allison in Beijing on Tuesday, engaging in a deep discussion on the future of China-U.S. relations.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized that over the past 50 years, the most significant event in international relations has been the recovery and development of China-U.S. relations. Looking ahead, he noted that the international community most aspires for China and the United States to find a proper way to coexist harmoniously over the next 50 years.
“The principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation provide fundamental guidance for viewing and handling China-U.S. relations,” Wang stated.
He pointed out that China and the United States have completely different histories and cultures and should not judge each other by their own standards. Wang highlighted the Chinese philosophy of “harmony without uniformity,” contrasting it with what he described as the “binary opposition thinking” of some Americans.
Graham Allison, known for his work on international relations and as the author of “Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap?”, has long advocated for understanding and managing the competitive aspects of China-U.S. relations to avoid conflict.
The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to navigate the complex relationship between the two global powers, emphasizing dialogue and mutual understanding as key components in shaping future interactions.
