Nauru’s President David Adeang Makes Historic State Visit to China

Nauru’s President David Adeang is on a historic state visit to China from March 24 to 29 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. This milestone marks the first state visit since Nauru resumed diplomatic relations with China earlier this year, signaling a new era of cooperation between the two nations.

In January, Nauru made the significant decision to sever “diplomatic ties” with the Taiwan region on January 15 and reestablish diplomatic relations with China on January 24. President Adeang’s visit underscores Nauru’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with China and exploring opportunities for mutual development.

The visit aims to enhance political mutual trust, expand economic collaboration, and foster cultural exchanges. Discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including trade, investment, the blue economy, digital economy, climate cooperation, clean energy, culture, education, and tourism.

One notable example of cooperation is the transformation of Aiwo Port Terminal in Nauru by China Harbour Engineering Company. The upgrading and renovation of the port have turned it into the country’s first international port, creating job opportunities and boosting economic growth through increased connectivity, trade, and investment.

During his visit, President Adeang is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The leaders are expected to discuss ways to deepen bilateral ties and may sign agreements and memorandums of understanding in various sectors. Both countries are poised to upgrade their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, paving the way for high-level collaboration under initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, Global Development Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Security Initiative.

This visit reflects China’s genuine desire to work with Nauru as a development partner and Nauru’s confidence in China as a reliable ally. As the two nations embark on this new chapter, their strengthened relationship is set to contribute positively to regional stability and prosperity.
