World Meteorological Day 2024: China at the Frontline of Global Climate Action

March 23, 2024, marks World Meteorological Day, celebrating the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on this day in 1950. This year’s theme, “At the Frontline of Climate Action,” underscores the imperative for global cooperation, coordination, and communication in weather, climate, and water sciences to deepen society’s understanding of the climate system amidst global warming.

The year 2022 recorded the hottest summer to date, with widespread natural calamities such as heat waves, droughts, and torrential rains affecting communities worldwide. These events highlight the urgent need for collective efforts in combating climate change—a global challenge that impacts all humanity.

Green and low-carbon development has gained global traction as awareness of climate change intensifies. As the largest developing nation, China has emerged as a significant actor, contributor, and leader in the global response to climate change. Upholding the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, China is integrating harmonious coexistence between humans and nature into its modernization journey, fostering high-quality growth.

China has committed to robust climate policies, pledging to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) emphasizes the importance of a global perspective in climate governance. The CMA has established an extensive atmospheric observation network, including one global and six regional background stations, to monitor greenhouse gas emissions. High-precision observation stations are instrumental in assessing the effectiveness of China’s efforts to peak carbon emissions and reach carbon neutrality.

To better understand renewable energy resources, the CMA has conducted a national survey of wind and solar energy potentials, creating detailed green energy maps. These initiatives enable accurate forecasts for weather and power generation for new energy facilities, supporting the strategic layout and distribution of wind, solar, and other clean energy sources.

World Meteorological Day 2024 serves as a reminder of the critical role that nations play in addressing climate change. Through concerted global action and shared commitment, a sustainable and prosperous future is within reach.
