China’s internet user base has soared to an impressive 1.092 billion as of December 2023, according to a report by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). This figure represents nearly 78 percent of the nation’s population, highlighting the immense scale of connectivity across the country.
The report emphasizes the pivotal role of China’s “dual gigabit” network—a robust combination of optical fiber and 5G technology—in propelling the digital economy forward. This advanced infrastructure includes over 68,000 32-bit IPv6 blocks, more than 20 million “.cn” domain names, and an extensive network of 337 million 5G base stations that encompass urban areas at all city and county levels.
Beyond expanding technological reach, China is actively working to make the internet more inclusive. The report notes that over 2,500 websites and mobile applications have been updated with accessibility features tailored for senior citizens. Additionally, more than 140 million smartphones and televisions have been equipped with interfaces designed to be user-friendly for the elderly population.
The surge in online services mirrors China’s ongoing economic recovery. Online car-hailing services experienced significant growth, with user numbers reaching 90 million by the end of 2023—a year-on-year increase of 20.7 percent. Similarly, online medical services saw a 14.2 percent annual growth, attracting over 51 million users.
Consumer behavior is also shifting, with a growing preference for domestic brands among online shoppers. Over 58.3 percent of consumers have purchased trendy products from domestic brands in the past six months, indicating a rising inclination towards homegrown products.
These developments underscore the dynamic nature of China’s digital landscape, as increased connectivity fuels economic growth and transforms consumer habits. The expansion of internet accessibility, coupled with innovative services, is reshaping the way individuals interact, shop, and access essential services across the country.
