In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating in Sydney on Thursday. Wang Yi emphasized the importance of Australia making independent policy decisions that align with its own national interests.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed China’s willingness to work collaboratively with Australia to build a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership. “Australia is a partner of China, and our bilateral ties are moving in the right direction,” Wang stated, highlighting the need for mutual trust and win-win cooperation.
Underscoring Australia’s role on the global stage, Wang noted, “Australia is an ally of the U.S., and more importantly, a sovereign state.” He urged Australia to make policy decisions based on its own interests rather than external influences. Wang Yi reiterated that China is eager to share its development opportunities with other countries, including Australia.
Former Prime Minister Paul Keating acknowledged China’s significant economic growth and the vast opportunities it presents. “China has a large economy with broad development space,” Keating remarked. He dismissed notions of China being a threat to the world, stating that its development is unstoppable. Keating expressed confidence in the positive trajectory of China-Australia relations.
The meeting between Wang Yi and Paul Keating comes at a pivotal time as both nations seek to enhance diplomatic and economic ties. The discussions signal a mutual interest in fostering deeper understanding and cooperation, benefiting not only the two countries but also contributing to regional stability and prosperity.
