China’s Sports Boom Fuels Economic Growth, Says Top Sports Official

Beijing, October 2023 — The continued growth of China’s sports industry is playing a pivotal role in the nation’s economic and social development, according to Gao Zhidan, director of the General Administration of Sport of China. Speaking at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Monday after the closing meeting of the second session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Gao highlighted the sector’s significant contributions.

“The sports industry has been a major driver of economic growth and social progress,” Gao stated. “Its rapid expansion reflects not only the increasing popularity of sports among our people but also its integral role in improving the quality of life and boosting economic vitality.”

China’s sports industry has seen remarkable growth over the past decade. Since 2012, the industry has grown by an average of 15.4 percent annually. In 2022, its total value reached 3.3 trillion yuan (approximately $459.3 billion), marking an increase of 1.3 trillion yuan (about $180.9 billion) over previous years.

Winter sports, in particular, experienced a significant boom in 2023, continuing a trend of over ten years of steady growth. The successful hosting of winter sports events has not only elevated China’s status in international sports but also stimulated domestic interest and participation.

Gao emphasized that many cities are hosting various sports events and activities to enhance their image and stimulate economic development. “These events attract tourism, create jobs, and boost local economies,” he said.

The government has been supporting the industry’s growth through policies aimed at encouraging investment, improving infrastructure, and promoting sports education. Gao underscored the importance of continued efforts to integrate sports into people’s daily lives and harness its potential for economic development.

“We are committed to building a strong sports nation,” Gao said. “By fostering a vibrant sports culture, we not only enrich the lives of our people but also contribute to the overall prosperity and development of our country.”
