In 2023, China made significant strides in environmental conservation by recycling 4.5 million tonnes of used household appliances. According to data from relevant industry associations, these discarded appliances contained substantial quantities of precious metals such as gold, silver, copper, and tin, as well as plastics.
Recycling efforts have not only recovered valuable materials but also contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Statistics indicate that recycling one tonne of used household appliances can reduce emissions, including carbon dioxide, by about 4.7 tonnes. Despite this progress, only about 20 percent of used home appliances in China have been recycled through formal channels that promote environmentally friendly dismantling and recycling practices.
The improper handling of used household appliances, such as hasty dismantling and careless disposal, poses severe environmental risks. This negligence leads to severe environmental pollution and prevents valuable components and materials from being reused. Addressing this issue is crucial for environmental sustainability and resource conservation.
China’s commitment to recycling marks an important step toward a more sustainable future. Enhancing formal recycling channels and promoting awareness about proper disposal methods can further improve environmental outcomes and resource recovery.
